Over the last few years, Quinoa has made a niche for itself on dinner tables across the globe. While mostly produced in Peru and Bolivia, this herbaceous plant is now being grown in other countries too, and its popularity has soared thanks to the fact that it is gluten-free and rich in both protein and iron. Made into burgers, served with a curry or used as flour… here’s how to eat it.

The key to quinoa

While quinoa dishes are an ever more common sight on restaurant menus around the world, some of the more traditional recipes have stood the test of time. In South America, for example, quinoa is very popular as a side dish served with meat or fish. Far from being a mere fad, quinoa is an established staple throughout much of the continent, where it is served with anything from meat stew to steamed vegetables. It can also be mixed with herbs and spices and chopped raw vegetables to make a salad.

Quinoa is now all the rage in Europe and North America, where it’s eaten as a savoury dish or dessert, hot or cold, and in all its many forms. Quinoa flour is a real find for anyone wanting to reduce their gluten consumption, as it gives cakes, bread and biscuits a delicious nutty taste. And thanks to its extreme versatility, quinoa can also be used to make veggie burgers, patties and falafels. On the whole, it’s a healthy and tasty staple that looks set to remain a firm favourite with chefs and food lovers alike

Speed things up with your steam iron

Your housewarming party was the ideal opportunity to ask for a useful gift — your new steam iron that you knew needed to be both lightweight and easy to use. Thanks to your brand new iron, you shouldn’t need to spend all day ironing shirts, trousers and household linen. With the help of a little steam and a few clever ironing tips, you can say goodbye forever to unsightly creases and tennis elbow, and even discover that ironing can be a pleasure!

The most important factor in choosing a steam iron is how much ironing you need to do during the week. If you can’t stand misshapen skirts and overstretched T-shirts, then choose an iron that’s extremely user-friendly (some even have vertical steam for perfect crease-free clothes). And finally, don’t forget that limescale is your steam iron’s public enemy no. 1. For perfect results every time, use filtered water and clean your iron regularly. Because, let’s admit it, you couldn’t live without it even for a week!

With its inimitable taste and reduced GI, nothing beats a slice of toast!

What could be better than the smell of hot toast and coffee in the morning? From rolls and baguette to sliced bread and muffins, you’d be hard put to resist the delicious smell of fresh toast emanating from your toaster. And whether you prefer it with butter, jam or spread, toast has some surprising hidden assets.

Toast – your best breakfast companion

Come rain or shine, you prefer your morning bread toasted. Satisfyingly crunchy, smothered in butter and jam, and filling your home with the delicious aroma of hot bread, toast helps you start the day right. Besides from being delicious, did you know that your daily toast has another asset that few people know about? Its glycemic index (GI) is lower than that of fresh bread!
When bread is toasted, its water content moves to the surface. This causes something called starch retrogradation, which decreases the GI. If you’re going for foods with the lowest possible GI, choose breads made from semi-wholemeal or wholemeal flour as opposed to white flour. And if you’re watching your figure or want to eat healthier, then toast’s little ‘bonus’ will no doubt get you reaching for your toaster more often, knowing that you can toast away to your heart’s content!
