Halloween is a time-old tradition that everyone loves! It’s a chance for young and old alike to get dressed up and also make and enjoy some creative Halloween dishes.

TBYS-Halloween

Be as wacky and garish as possible!

Halloween is a time to pull out all the stops! Your food should try to reflect the ghoulish theme and be as garish as possible, with orange and black and anything made from pumpkin or squash the order of the day. Get some Halloween paper cups and plates, and sculpt your largest pumpkin into a Jack-o’-Lantern.

If you’ve invited all your friends, go for dishes that are easily shared – pumpkin loaf, spicy pumpkin soup and goat’s cheese and pumpkin pie are all simple yet colourful dishes that everyone will love. However, Halloween is first and foremost a sweet toothed festival. So while the kids are terrifying the neighbours, the grown-ups can indulge too! Both muffins and cupcakes are perfect, so long as you’re creative with the decorations – use icing, marzipan and various food colouring to cover your cakes with spiders, skulls, mummies and ghosts!

Cooking tip : Make mini orange-coloured chocolate lollipops, or macaroons decorated with tiny chocolate spiders’ legs and sugar-ball eyes. Scare factor guaranteed!

What to eat for breakfast?

Breakfast is the perfect time to treat yourself. It needs to be both nourishing and high in protein to get you through to lunchtime and avoid those mid-morning sugar cravings. Sweet or savoury – you choose! If you prefer savoury, you can create an endless number of toast toppings, from avocado to scrambled eggs to cheese spread and so on. If you have more of a sweet tooth, go for porridge made with milk or almond milk and served with fresh fruit. You should get between 500 and 700 calories from your breakfast, which gives you a lot of scope.

Which foods to focus on?

While there’s no blueprint for the perfect breakfast, it’s still best to avoid foods that contain a lot of fat or sugar. As always, homemade is obviously a great idea, but you can also purchase simple, healthy products to help you make your meal, such as oats, sugar-free muesli, gluten-free sliced bread, fresh fruit for smoothies etc. As for the protein, you can either opt for white meat or choose sources of vegetable protein such as peanut butter, buckwheat pancakes, or even hummus for the savoury fiends among you.

Some of favourite breakfast recipes are a classic pan fried breakfast, strawberry pancakes and also the carrot muffins if you’re eating breakfast on the go!

Wherever in the world you live, you’ve probably heard of Jamie Oliver. TV chef turned international food icon, Jamie Oliver is much more than just a cook with TV programs broadcasted in dozens of countries. A bestselling author and owner of countless restaurants around the globe, Jamie is also a staunch advocate for healthy, balanced eating. But how did he get to where he is today?

JOL-1

Jamie Oliver’s route to fame

While Jamie now figures among the world’s most famous chefs, the many other facets of this British icon are sometimes less well-known. His route to fame started on the set of the cooking show The Naked Chef, but ever since then he’s been putting his talents to other uses, too.

Inquisitive and passionate, Jamie’s interest in cooking is fuelled primarily by his desire to help people in their daily lives. So nowadays, when Jamie Oliver’s name is mentioned, people don’t just think of his many recipe books, cookery courses and restaurants (such as Fifteen and Jamie’s Italian), but also of his crusade for healthy living for everyone.

Advocating healthy eating

Jamie’s agenda has always been about getting families cooking together and eating homemade meals full of fresh ingredients. It’s an anti-junk food crusade that calls on young and old alike to start cooking simple, delicious recipes with quality ingredients. Jamie’s website features a huge variety of recipes and inspiration to get you cooking up a storm in the kitchen and enjoying eating wholesome, healthy food. So it seemed a natural step for him to team up with T-fal to develop a range of pots and pans that meet everyone’s needs – from home cooks to serious chefs and everyone in between.

Have you ever wondered about the ideal cooking time for a rare or medium steak? If you want perfect barbecues, chops and kebabs, then you need to know just how long to cook each type of meat !

Meat-1024x682

Rare, medium or well-done – how do you like your steak ?

Needless to say, the more you like your steak rare, the less you need to cook it. An extra-rare steak, for example, should be cooked in a flash so that it’s still almost cold on the inside. Steak cooked this quickly takes on a slightly blueish tinge, which is why it’s also known as ‘blue steak’.

Cooking tip : It’s much easier to cook meat properly when you have the right equipment. The OptiGrill, for example, adjusts to the thickness of each portion so that everyone gets their meat just how they like it.

For maximum flavour and texture, follow the prescribed cooking times for each type of meat. Meat that’s too well-done will be tasteless and tough as leather, while some of your guests may feel a bit queasy if their meat turns out too rare!

Here are some basic cooking times to remember:

Beefsteak, sirloin, bavette, fillet, skirt:

Extra-rare/blue: 30 seconds to a minute per side.

Medium: 2¼ minutes per side

Well-done: Three to four minutes per side.

Roast beef:

15 minutes per pound of meat.

Pork chops:

7 to 8 minutes per side.

Veal:

5 minutes per side.
